Since the establishment of the Department of Ophthalmology, Zagazig University almost 50 years ago, it is committed to provide adequate medical education for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, clinical training and patients care.
The department serves the community of one of the most important and populous Governorates of Egypt, Sharkia Governorate, and a tertiary referral for many communities in East Delta. A wide array of medical services is offered by a well-qualified and nationally renowned staff of around 100.
Comprehensive eye care services are provided at the outpatient clinic like performing routine eye exams and carrying out investigations using cutting edge equipment, and providing treatment for general ophthalmic disorders.
The department operates through 4 divisions and provides cutting-edge surgeries: cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, corneal surgery, ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive survey and vitreoretinal surgery.
The department is also committed to carry out research in the field of ophthalmology in the form of theses as requirement for the masters and doctorate degrees programs in ophthalmology. Department faculty is actively engaged in research, presenting in national and international conventions and publishing nationally and internationally in peer-reviewed journals.
The educational goals and objectives for undergraduate medical students are to teach sufficient ophthalmology in a blended learning approach to enable future physicians to recognize and manage common eye disorders, to identify sight threatening emergencies and life threatening conditions presenting with ocular findings, and to recognize ocular manifestations of some common systemic diseases.
